Rest In Peace… Tony Allen

We lost this week another music giant, an ancestor!

Tony Allen went to the rest of the world from the inside out that we found today! The well-lived 79-year-old master leaves the Afrobeat legacy he created with his partner Fela Kuti spread across the four corners of the world!

When I arrived in France, i had the chance to meet him, to chat a few times, one of them in an african restaurant that he liked most in the Château Rouge neighborhood, a little bit of Africa in Paris.

I also saw some of his shows in the city, one of them a huge production, where he played along with Questlove and The Roots, both together with Macy Gray on vocals – that was crazy!

We were honored to curate a dream project w my drumming hero #TonyAllen (Questlove’s Afro-Picks) gathering folks from all walks of life like #DavidMurray #MamaniKeita #AmpFiddler #TheAntiballas #MacyGray #BlackThought & a slew of badass musicians. I will celebrate this man’s life’s work tonight through his drum work on various African funk projects (yes most notably #FelaKuti) if you are a lover of #AfroBeat the original Afrobeat then you will join me for the celebrations of all celebrations 2nite 9pm!!!
